Todd Gray: Goofy
Todd Gray’s ‘Goofy,’ shown at MoCA struck me as familiar at first, but then, agonizing. The character’s well-known silhouette invited me in, but the shadows that shrouded this upright, silly little man-dog gave me pause.
I lunged forward, and then, stepped back. I smiled, and then, gasped. I looked twice. My brain second-guessed what my eyes reported, and then, an overwhelming sense of frustration rippled beneath my skin.
I wanted to see him. I wanted to connect with this inanimate animation so badly that it pained me to see only his silhouette behind a screen, a veil, reminiscent of that one scene in Gone With the Wind, vowing to never go hungry again. As if he ever could.
But, there he stood … like a floppy eared, baggy pantsed Scarlet, either coming or going, but never connecting with the child in me—the one scratching at my eyes from the inside, clamoring to clear the covering.
